Having had the privilege of documenting every Falls Festival ever held in Tasmania I am really starting to get amped for this years event. Just had a little “jumping for joy” moment realising it’s so close. See you at Marion Bay.

FOR THE BAY // FUNDRAISING FOR OCEAN CONSERVATION

As a surfer, an oceanographer, and a Tasmanian I’m passionate about our coasts and oceans. Late last year I was really chuffed to be able to take part in the “Oceans of Art” event, donating a large canvas print featuring Ralphs Bay. “Ralphs Bay Twilight” was captured on June 22, 2010, the day the Tasmanian Government announced the Bay would be spared from canal estate development.

The Oceans of Art event auctioned off works including sculpture, painting, furniture design, photography and works on paper from artists such as renowned craftsman and Living Treasure Kevin Perkins, State Architect Peter Poulet, favourite local printmakers Madeleine Goodwolf, Mandy Renard and Michael Schlitz, wilderness photographer Rob Blakers, and exciting painters Tricky Walsh and Bobby-z Lambert.

I was honored to be involved and to support Environment Tasmania’s ocean conservation work via Ocean Planet.

Vancouver Island and Victoria, BC is about as close as you can get to the feel of being in my home – Hobart, Tasmania – while still being in North America. Maybe that’s while I felt comfortable there? The water, the beaches, the coastline, the charming harbor town. It’s a stunning place and we had lots of fun roaming the waterfront capturing an e-session with Kelly and Amy.

Destination Photographer // Lake Louise – Banff National Park, Alberta

In 2008 I was lucky enough to spend 6 months in Montana studying under Neil Chaput de Saintonge, founder of the Rocky Mountain School of Photography and student of Ansel Adams. His enthusiasm and love for both photography and teaching meant many long nights and missed lunches staying late into the 2nd or 3rd hour of a “one hour lesson with Neil”.

One of the many photographic notions that Neil passed on that has always stuck with me was the idea of using longer lenses to “pull out” a tight composition from an otherwise grandiose landscape. Yesterday, at Lake Louise in the Banff National Park of Alberta, I found myself less inspired by the typical angles of this very heavily photographed location – and called on my nights with Neil.

My travels around the globe have meant that keeping up with posting Portraits of the Week (PotW) has been challenging, with many still burried on the platter yet to be published.

Today we have Zoe, scintillating Zoe, a creative young Tasmanian woman who loves to create contemporary jewellery. These portraits feature two of her pieces, a “skull” earring set and a striking “stag head” pendant, captured along the River Derwent in her Hobart stomping grounds. Fun, fun.

autumn falls

I’m in New England now – summer quickly turning to autumn – trees all color and the air full of leaves looking for a place to land. Travel plans have been skewed as the recent drenching all along the Eastern seaboard floods the roads and also quickly strips the trees bare.

Looking forward to returning to summer in Tasmania. A few weeks.
